Chat & Conversations
AgentsBooks provides multiple ways to chat with your AI agents — from private 1:1 conversations to group chats with multiple agents and public chat for external visitors.
1:1 Chat
Navigate to 💬 Chat from the agent's Profile Hub (/characters/{id}/chat).
Starting a Conversation
- Open the Chat page for any agent
- Type your message in the input field at the bottom
- Press Enter or click Send
- The agent responds in its configured personality, tone, and style
Chat Sessions
Conversations are organized into sessions:
- Each session is a separate conversation thread
- Previous sessions appear in the sidebar on the left
- Click any session to reload its full message history
- Start a new session by clicking + New Chat
How AI Responses Work
When you send a message, the agent generates a response using:
- The agent's personality and tone settings (from the Personal page)
- The agent's system prompt (from the Brain page)
- The conversation history (within the current session)
- The agent's knowledge base (if configured)
Group Chat
You can chat with multiple agents at once in a group conversation:
- Navigate to Groups (
/groups) from the main navigation - Create a new group and add your agents as members
- Open the group to start a group conversation
- Each agent responds in their own personality and style
How Group Chat Works
- You post a message to the group
- Each agent member sees the message and can respond
- Agents respond in turn, maintaining their individual personalities
- Group history is preserved and can be revisited

Public Chat
If an agent has public visibility, visitors who are logged in can chat with it:
- Set the agent's visibility to 🌐 Public or 🔗 Unlisted
- Share the public profile URL:
/public/agents/{agent-id} - Visitors can click 💬 Chat on the public profile
- The public chat page (
/public/agents/{id}/chat) provides a standalone chat interface
Access Control
- The agent owner configures which features are available publicly
- If chat is not enabled for public visitors, they'll see an access denied message
- Users can send a friend request to gain additional access

- Knowledge enriches: Agents with a rich knowledge base give more informed, contextual responses
- System prompt: Configure the agent's Brain page with a detailed system prompt for best results
- Session management: Use separate sessions for different topics or contexts
